Reflexology for labour

How you may be feeling

As you near the end of your pregnancy, you may be feeling exhausted and drained – both physically and emotionally. Your bump is getting bigger and bigger as your baby grows and this may result in aches and pains in your back or hips, a very over-active bladder and difficulty sleeping. At the same time you may veer between being excited about your baby arriving and anxiety about the birth and becoming a Mum. This is all completely normal! And although time may feel like it is dragging, rest assured that your baby will be here soon enough. In the meantime, having some pregnancy reflexology may help you to relax, sleep better and prepare your body and mind for labour.

Reflexology for labour treatment

The aim of this treatment is to help support your body as it prepares for labour and to promote relaxation at at time when anxiety levels are often high. It may also help to encourage labour if your baby is overdue and both you and your baby are ready! This type of reflexology should only be carried out by a qualified Pregnancy Reflexologist with specialist training in this area.

Priming or preparation for labour is 2-fold:

  1. Relaxation – a relaxed body and mind may boost your chances of labour starting naturally.
  2. Priming – strongly stimulating specific reflexology and acupressure points with the intention of encouraging the onset of labour.

There is no guarantee that the body will respond. What may happen is that you will go home feeling relaxed and fall asleep easily that evening – these can be favourable conditions for your body to go into labour.

Just to let you know that I had my baby boy last Sunday – well Saturday night really. He was born at 0043! I had the exact labour I wanted and he is gorgeous! So I think I came to see you on the Thursday … on Thursday and Friday nights I was having very mild cramps which I slept through and went on until Saturday at about 4pm where they then took on another pace… so I think the reflexology did push it along!

What does reflexology for labour involve?

Reflexology for labour appointments involve a full pregnancy health consultation to check that reflexology is indeed right for you and your baby at this time. Then a reflexology treatment is given during which lots of relaxation and hormone balancing techniques are used to help your body and mind get in the right place. In addition, certain areas of the foot are strongly stimulated to encourage the onset of labour. All these techniques are fully explained prior to the treatment and a comprehensive information pack is provided.

Important cautions

The health and wellbeing of you and your baby are paramount so there will be certain circumstances under which it is not appropriate to give you a reflexology treatment. Click here to find out more.

Please note that you must bring your maternity notes with you to your appointment so that I can clarify important health details. Failure to do so will mean that I cannot treat you!
