Let me tell you a little bit about me!
I absolutely love receiving reflexology – and that’s how it all began.
Back in 2002 I was working in my dream job in research into Infectious Diseases at Imperial College. I spent my days at a lab bench carrying out experiments and reading scientific papers, playing my own small part in understanding how pathogenic bacteria cause disease. I was also getting married and had started to feel tired and run-down from all the commuting into London combined with a busy job. So my lovely mum bought me a reflexology treatment as a relaxing gift. Little did she know what she had unleashed!
I was amazed at how much better I felt after my first ever reflexology treatment, I felt positive, upbeat and had a lovely feeling of well-being. There was no stopping me after that and I have been having regular treatments ever since. Reflexology has really helped me through the ups and downs of life and I still always really look forward to having a session!
A life-changing decision
Much as I enjoyed academic research, I started to become aware of how narrow my field of expertise had become and how far I had moved from my original goal of helping people to live healthier, happier lives. I took a leap of faith in January 2006 and resigned from my academic job with its regular income to stay at home looking after my children, while training to be a reflexologist.
I was fascinated about the effects that reflexology can have on our emotions as well as on physical health, so I looked around for a training course that would address both. This led me to the respected and AoR accredited Phillip Salmon School of Reflexology, which focused on producing well-rounded and self-confident reflexologists. I spread this one-year diploma course over 2 and half years, graduating in 2009.
Western science meets Eastern medicine
I’m intrigued by Eastern philosophies and treatments, learning first about Classical Chinese Medicine and then beginning my training in the Japanese art of Jin Shin Jyutsu in 2016. Jin Shin has come in hugely useful during lockdown as it’s foundation is self-help through self-treatments and I have been working on myself daily and seen the benefits in both my physical and emotional health during the pandemic. I have also used the extra time to intensively study Jin Shin Jyutsu and am now a fully qualified practitioner and self-help teacher.
This quote comes from fabulous tutor and reflexologist extraordinaire Dr Peter MacKereth (he has a PhD in reflexology, how wonderful is that!) and it’s basically my mantra. Peter was referring to patients going through cancer tests and treatments and how to think on our feet and get creative to help someone feeling tense, anxious or in pain. This mantra has helped me adapt and be creative in how I work during this Covid-19 pandemic and is the reason I’m now giving guided treatments online and teaching self-help, so that we can use the magic of our own hands to help ourselves.
Balancing work and life
Because I love my work, it can be very easy to get caught in the flow of treatments and courses and research. As well as conventional things to counterbalance this (gardening, walks in nature, spending time with my boys), I have a secret weapon – llamas! I don’t know what it is about these beautiful creatures, but seeing one always makes me smile and has done from a very young age – and maybe one day I’ll have one (or 2 or 12!!) of my own. For now you will see a little nod to them in my treatment room – if you look hard enough (don’t worry, you’re not going to be confronted with 100s of llamas looking at you whilst having a treatment!)
